In-vitro fertilization: This procedure is undertaken by those women who cannot be treated by lifestyle changes or intake of medications. In this technique, the eggs are made to fertilize with the sperm of the male partner in the specialized laboratory followed by the implanting of healthy embryos into the uterus. The sperm is provided by the male partner through normal ejaculation or by sperm retrieval methods. IVF technique has higher rates of successful pregnancy and better chances of single childbirth due to the transfer of one fertilized egg into the uterus.
Surgery: The last approach when any other options are not working is Laparoscopic Ovarian drilling surgery. In this minimally invasive procedure, few tiny holes are made with the help of a laser or an electrically heated needle on the surface of the ovary. A laparoscope (tiny instrument fitted with a camera) is inserted to visualize the internal organs. This is done to reduce the thickness of the cortex (outer covering of ovaries) which is common in PCOS patients and is one of the possible reasons for preventing immediate ovulation. The results are favourable only for few months (usually 6 to 8). It is an outpatient procedure that is carried under general anaesthesia.
