Ovulation Induction Treatment: Who Needs It and How It Works

Ovulation Induction Treatment

When it comes to conception, the ovary releases a healthy egg and this is one of the most important processes. This is called as ovulation. But in most women ovulation may not always be regular, or in fact, may never happen. This is where the role of ovulation induction treatment comes in the assistance of couples who are getting pregnant.

What is Ovulation Induction?

Ovulation induction is a procedure used when fertility hormones are used to induce the ovary to grow and release ova or eggs. It aims at stimulating the regular ovulation process and enhancing conception.

This may be either as a single treatment option or as a combination of therapies such as intrauterine insemination (IUI), IVF or carried out together with timed intercourse depending on the case of the couple.

What is Ovulation Induction

Who Needs Ovulation Induction?

At this point, this need not be mentioned – ovulation induction is not universal! It is particularly prescribed to women undergoing irregular ovulation or does not ovulate at all. Some of the general conditions that this treatment would be used in include:

Irregular Menstrual Cycles

Women with low frequency periods might not be ovulating on a regular basis. Ovulation induction assists in the control of the cycle and timing.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

PCOS is considered to be one of the greatest causes of infertility. PCOS is usually caused by hormonal imbalance that renders the ovaries incapable of releasing eggs. Ovulation stimulation causes the growth of eggs and their release.

Unexplained Infertility

In other instances, basic fertility tests are all normal but conception is still not observed. In such scenarios, ovulation induction can be done to boost the quantity of released eggs hence enhancing the likelihood of fertilisation.

Hormonal Imbalances

Some of the disorders such as thyroid disorders or high prolactin levels may interfere with ovulation by interfering with the hormones. It is at this stage that the ovulatory process needs to be stimulated with control in order to be revived.

Late Ovulation / poor egg development.

Other women ovulate either late or they do not ovulate at all or their eggs fail to mature. In these situations pharmacological substances might improve the quality of eggs and their timing.

How does Ovulation Induction Work?

Ovulation induction is a highly monitored procedure, which entails medication and timing.

Step 1: Initial Evaluation

In Zeeva Fertility, an extensive fertility examination process by blood test of hormones, ultrasound examination and examining medical history is started. This assists in identifying correct medication and dosage to every patient.

Step 2: Fertility Medications

Ovarian stimulating drugs are prescribed by doctors. These could involve oral medicines which in most cases are in the first line of treatment thus assisting in triggering ovulation through hormonal by affecting hormones. The other one is injection-based hormones (gonadotropins), which are administered to more complex cases in order to directly stimulate ovaries.

These drugs stimulate the development of one or more follicles (fluid-filled sacs in the ovaries which hold eggs).

Step 3: Monitoring the Cycle

Regular monitoring of it is necessary so as to assure the working safety and effectiveness of the treatment. This involves ultrasound scan to monitor growth of follicles and hormone level to monitor response.  Frequent checking facilitates the physicians to identify the appropriate ovulation time and also lower the chances of overstimulation.

Step 4: Triggering Ovulation

After the follicles are of the required size, a trigger injection can be administered to trigger ovulation. This makes the egg be released at an appropriate time.

Step 5: Assisted Procedure or Timed Intercourse.

Once ovulation is induced, the couples are encouraged to have timed intercourse in the most fertile time. In other situations, the physician can additionally prescribe IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) in order to raise the odds of fertilisation. It can be proceeded by IVF in case it is necessary.

What Are the Success Rates?

Ovulation induction can be very effective…particularly in women with ovulatory diseases. Several women are said to begin ovulating after a few cycles of treatment.

The success is determined by a number of factors, which include:

  • Age of the woman
  • Underlying cause of infertility
  • The general reproductive health

In Zeeva Fertility, the treatment plans are customised to give the highest likelihood of success and safety.

Are There Any Risks Involved?

Ovulation stimulation is a comparatively safe procedure provided that it is conducted by experts. But, as with any kind of medical therapy, it could be dangerous:

  • Are there more than 2 fetuses in the womb?
  • In rare instances only, Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS).
  • Light side effects including bloating or mood swings.

Monitoring plays a great role in ensuring that these risks are minimized.
